I can’t see their faces. Maybe the man in uniform is an Englishman, executing a WOG in Burma in the 1930s? But no, the English didn’t shoot convicts; they hanged them, until 1964…

…long after several American states had abolished capital punishment.

American states who abolished the death penalty before England:

    Alaska (1957)
    Hawaii (1948)
    Maine (1887)
    Michigan (1846)
    Minnesota (1911)
    Vermont (1964)
    Wisconsin (1853)

Sullen anti-American Englishmen: Polish your own country’s tarnished pot before you bash Americans for their tarnished kettles.

PS, a marginal correction: Although Alaska and Hawaii did not become American states until 1959 and 1960, their territories abolished the death penalty in 1956 and 1947. And at any rate, even if we leave out Alaska and Hawaii, four American states abolished the death penalty before England did. It balances the marginal difference between Britain’s and America’s abolition of slavery; Britain abolished slavery in 1833, the US Federal Government did in 1866…

…but then many American states abolished slavery long before Britain did.

“Still, I imagine that many Glasgow merchants were still busy slave trading elsewhere.”

A similar kind of hypocricy was endemic in the colonies of New England, who had technically abolished slavery in the 1700s but continued to engage in the slave trade:

The two great slave traders were the white Europeans and the Muslim Arabs. It is a toss up which civilisation enslaved the highest number.

People also imagine white slavers capturing black Africans. In fact, white slave traders tended to die of disease while in the jungle and hence bought their slaves from other Africans.

“Scholars estimate that about 12,000,000 Africans were sold by Africans to Europeans… …and 17,000,000 were sold to Arabs.

    http://www.scaruffi.com/politics/slavetra.html

Arabs not only enslaved Africans. They also enslaved huge number of white Europeans.

The Muslim Barbary Corsairs, between the 16th & 19th centuries, enslaved over 1 million Europeans by seizing them from as far away as Ireland & Iceland, while the Ottomans also directly enslaved large numbers of Europeans either directly through their imperial colonial wars of conquest or as required tribute from already conquered European territories. For instance, the famous Ottoman Janissaries were Christian Greek, Albanian, Serb, Bosnian, Ukrainian and Southern Russian slaves bought as young boys.

It is an interesting fact that at the time of the Spanish Armada, Barbary pirates were raiding the coasts of Britain & Ireland and seizing the populations of whole villages which were then sold as slaves in the Ottoman slave markets. Women were greatly preferred. Men were often castrated.

The Barbary pirates justified their piracy and slavery, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams in 1785 in the following terms

“It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every muslim who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy’s ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once.”

While the British managed to largely force the stop of the slave trade on the high seas, the overland African slave trade by the Arabs continued. Slavery continues to this day in two, now Islamic, countries colonised by Islamic Arabs – Mauritania and Sudan (with an estimated 600,000 and 200,000 slaves respectively). As recently, as 1950, it is thought that 20% (450,000) of Saudi Arabia’s population was slaves. Surprisingly, slavery still continues in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf to this day.

Check out Wikipedia or a host of other websites which detail the historical extent of the Aran Muslim slave trade.

    Black slaves in China

Arab traders brought East African slaves for the first time during Tang China.

In 651 Arab delegates were sent to the Chinese court, marking the first official contact between the Arab caliphate and Tang Chinese government.

Black slaves were just one of many commodities in the Arabs’ large-scale maritime trade with China, which peaked during the Tang and Song dynasty (960-1275).

By the ninth century the Arabs had established a sizable community in Guanzhou, and local residents would have been able to see African slaves in Arab households and on trading ships.

Some of the wealthy Chinese owned African slaves themselves, whom they kept as doormen.

Lets coin a new term, in the spirit of ‘Laowais’, I shall call this term, ‘ShaBiness’. Yes, with a capital ‘B’ in the middle. It shall be a noun, with roots in the Chinese pinyin words of “Sha Bi”, implying a excessive amount of “dumb cunt-ness” and annoying ignorance plus gauche.

I sense an unhealthy and distinctly high level of ‘ShaBiness’ floating around…

I must congratulate the mylaowai team for managing to get back on the blocked list, at least in Xiamen anyway. With this amazing achievement and all the hard work and effort put into it I’d like to award mylaowai a Blue Peter badge, unfortunately I lost it, so I hope an IOU will suffice.

After 17,000 years of civilization and glory, you’d think they could get the fireworks manufacturing right…

Fireworks plant blast kills 19, injures 153

An explosion at a fireworks factory outside Harbin in northeastern China killed 19 people and injured 153, state media reported on Tuesday.

Xinhua news agency said five people were still missing after the explosion early on Monday in Yichun city. The blast caused a shockwave felt up to five kilometres away and prompted the evacuation of more than 2,000 residents.

A downpour had flooded a warehouse at the site and the blast occurred when workers were moving fireworks out of the building, local authorities told China Radio International.

      Several points of note here:

      1. Chinese fireworks explode after being saturated with water.

      2. Schoolchildren do not make good workers for fireworks factories.

      3. The schools (warehouse? puhleeeze!) themselves have leaky roofs.

      4. Chinese are basically cunts.

That’s because Macgyver wasn’t there with his multitool!! Speaking of which, where do I get one, it could come in handy when the next earthquake hits. If I remember rightly wasn’t it supposed to be on Friday 13th as predicted by some farmer somewhere?
