The best cigarettes for the young and still-growing – frankly, if there are things that I like in China, it is their relaxed attitude towards tobacco and alcoholic drinks. No irony meant.

JR, you sounded like my Dad (and no irony is intended either). I remember the first time I travelled with my Dad on my first ever trip to China. We often got stuck in train carriages with people smoking like chimneys. I complained to my Dad and suggested that he should do something about it. My Dad said to me, “People in China don’t have much freedom to choose what they like to do or say. Smoking and drinking are probably the only two activities they can choose to indulge or to refrain from doing. I would keep my mouth shut if I were you.”

I would add that unlike Ivan, many Chinese have drinking problems.
Ivan drinks, gets drunk, stays drunk falls down: No problem!
But most Chinese barely get past the first drink. Big problem.

Amusing, isn’t it?

C.A.: No question – if you deny ppl most freedoms, you have to be “generous” about small matters. Nevertheless – I like the way most ppl spend their pasttime in China. It’s comfortable, easy, and unspectacular. As for the first and the last drink (#4), I agree with Ned, so long as we are talking about Southern and Eastern China. I wouldn’t volunteer for a drinking contest with ppl from Harbin.

But JR, you know Harbin is a historical part of the Russian Empire; that’s why they know how to drink in Harbin.

Rather, the North Chinese invented alcoholic drinks (at the same time the Egyptians did), and were drinking when Europeans were still living in mud huts and sodomizing the wildlife.
