Last year I received this email from a reader:
Hey Dude, terrific site. If you could, please inform me as best you can, the preconceptions China has toward people of color. What are you observations on how people of color are treated in the major cities? What is the perceptions of Africans considering the huge economic stake in many African countries?
I enjoy reading your site, as I read more articles, I would love to get your opinion.
I did not, at the time, directly respond to this. Part of the reason was that there was already plenty on in the international press (this was just prior to the Genocide Olympics and just after the mass arrests of black people in Beijing), and part of the reason was that I didn’t feel that I could add much to the debate. I still feel that way, sorta-kinda.
Enter ChinaSMACK. Now, I’m not really a huge fan of the site – to me it reads a bit like a daytime soap having an illicit tryst with a fashion magazine – but it’s fair to say that it is very popular, and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it cleans up the China Blog Awards this year, by a wide margin. And that said, ChinaSMACK does do a very good job of bringing to you the feelings of the average Wang (at least, the average internet-connected Wang). They recently had a post on a Chinese girl whose mother was Shanghainese and whose biological father was American. A black American. She came to the public’s attention when she participated in a TV program called Oriental Angels. Folks, I gotta tell ya, this girl is as hot as they get: “Angel” doesn’t even begin to do her justice. What a babe!
Unfortunately for her, however, she is a black Chinese. Here are what Chinese netizens themselves said about her:
Lou Jing’s mother had a husband, then had an extramarital affair with a black man, then gave birth to Lou Jing, and then after her birth divorced.
And that black devil, after fucking ran back to his home in Africa.

When I first saw this week’s show, I too was very shocked, so stunned. Society’s norms and values haven’t becomes so “fei zhu liu”, has it? As a post-80s generation, I completely cannot accept this. If I were that girl, I would be so low key that I could not be any more low key. How could I possibly come out and expose my face, seeking attention and sympathy.it is difficult to understand.
What can I possibly say about the Chinese view on skin colour, that the Chinese themselves haven’t made crystal fucking clear?

As a Chinese person, I want to point out one thing: we simply do not need to make a big fuss about racism here, because our country does not have deep scars from racial conflicts in the past. Sure there has been ethnic issues, but we did not go as far as enslaving an entire race and now have to feel bad about.
I’m not saying those comments are wrong; they are extremely disrespectful to the black people. However, they are just as rude as calling people a faggot. and having been to the States for more than three years, I have seen plenty of people here who are insensitive to homosexuals. Racism and homophobia essentially fall under the same category: ignorance and fear of people who are different from themselves; but what I find interesting is that people are generally oversensitive about the former, but do not care as much about the latter.
In short: you do not have moral superiority over us.

I have a few friends who belong to a few of the ’56 Minorities’, and they would all disagree with you in the strongest possible way. They include Uighurs and Tibetans, who were enslaved as a people. Hui also. This isn’t my view, this is the way they see it themselves. In fact, the whole idea that China has ’56 Minorities’ is itself a lie – there are many more, but they are lumped together for the sake of Han propaganda. Again, this from one of my friends who is directly affected by it.

And Hitler’s rise to power was not based on anti-semitism, but on anti-Communism. Only a marginal fringe of Germans were deeply hostile to Jews, but many of them were afraid of Communism, for good reasons.

I disagree about this, Ned. Surely many Western leaders believed that – but Hitler’s main preocupation wasn’t winning the war. It was about killing as many jews as he could.

It seems to me that neo-nazis are much more rampant in Russia, China’s close ally, than in Germany. Every year, several hundred cases are reported on the racial attack against Asians or more broadly non-whites in Russia. Mess surrounding Chechens is utterly terrible. I don’t understand why China is now hand-in-hand with Russia, where even the Chinese are one of the main targets of racial crime.
China’s or CCP’s interest might be in making an intimate official relationship between China and Russia, Pakistan, or some African nations, no matter where their fellow Chinese have been killed. I think that CCP should make the general public aware of risk in being there.
Successful or not, Germany has a system of checking the rise of neo-nazis, but I doubt that Putin succeeds in a setup of combating neo-nazis in Russia.

Re Russia / Germany: Germany’s prosecutors actually register and deal with the cases. And while humanrightsfirst (your link, #31) notes a small decline in hate crimes in Germany, the number of violent hate crimes continues to grow steadily in Russia.
No question – each such case is one too many. But I won’t repeat myself – refer there. Has there been prosecution in Australia, or America?
