Today is a very exciting day. For starters, it’s International Communist Women’s Day, and that surely is very exciting. It’s also Fat Tuesday, or, as Americans call it, Every Tuesday. Wow. It’s also on this day in history that Johannes Kepler discovered the third law of planetary motion, which states that the universe revolves around Peking, or so I’m told.
But none of this compares to last Saturday, when the whole world celebrated Lei Feng Day.
Oh yes indeed! Lei Feng, the most famous hero of them all, the National Hero of China and sock-washer extraordinaire, is remembered every March 5th. He was truly a great man, and washed many socks. He was also run over by a reversing truck. Twice. After being wrapped in barbed wire. By his best friend. By accident, really it was. He even earned a medal for it.
I think it says something about China that the National Hero is celebrated for doing something nice (i.e. washing socks for other people). And for being run over by a slowly reversing truck. Twice. It really is no wonder that his memory is so revered.
And now you, too, can share in the joy of Lei Feng. Simply print this Lei Feng Commemorative Medal*, cut it out, and wear it with pride upon your very own sunken chest. Reminds me of something I read years ago. There’s a Lei Feng Museum in Nanchang, and apparently some waiguoren who was an expert photographer pointed something out to the museum director in the alleged photos of Comrade Lei Feng on exhibit (the color perhaps) which indicated that they could not have been taken before Lei’s tragic demise in 1962. The director freely admitted that the photos on display were not of Lei Feng, but were “re-creations”. That’s Zhongguostan for you.
By the way, I highly resent the implication that we Americans are a bunch of fatasses who have trouble cramming our lard-swollen rumps into our gas guzzling SUVs for the two minute drive to The Burger Trough while whining about gas prices that would thrill Europeans. Most Chinese people I know, and – I believe – most Chinese people I happened to talk with only once, don’t and didn’t leave the impression on me that they would be gleeful right now. The guys in the office were watching it – not making sales calls – saying things like ‘Kill the Japanese bastards.’ The Chinese boss, (probably a Party member) was encouraging this.
So the message is: To be a ‘good’ local runt one necessarily must hate the Nips, regardless of whatever calamity befalls them NEVER feel sorry for them, always HATE them.

Many Chinese people do hate “the Japanese”. And at least some Japanese hate or despise “the Chinese”. I guess they’ll never forgive the Chinese for what they’ve done to their country, and quite a number of their people, during the war.
Blanket hatred is stupid, and even under CCP rule, it is still the responsibility of every Chinese individual to judge things more wisely. Many do. You can find examples of more positive Chinese attitudes towards Japan online – it’s not as if such attitudes were banned in China. And if you haven’t heard similar discussions in the real Chinese world, you are hanging out with different people than I am. That’s no good reason for you to claim that you have the full picture (practically every yellow runt).
Try this article, or that one – do a pagesearch there with the words When I meet new people. Soong’s website could use some more permalinks. These articles or posts show a much more mixed picture than yours. (I won’t add too many links, so as not to get this comment filtered. Do a search yourself, if you care.)
Good judgment is no mere matter of education or class background either. Many of the most underexposed nationalist dickheads are actual or potential members of China’s “middle class”, i. e. upper class.
I’m no friend of the Chinese people. A fairly comprehensive statement of my views on China can be found here. (I doubt that you can read a post of that length with much benefit – but I rarely lose hope.)
That said, if you judge China as indiscriminately as many Chinese hate Japan, you are working exactly among the right company – you people deserve each other, no matter if you are yellow, white, or green. That’s actually a difference between you and MLW. A good sense of humor, and the preparedness to observe, rather than hating people’s behavior, can make things a lot easier, and makes a foreigner good company, sometimes even for Japan-hating Chinese people. Who do you want to blame for your own anger and resentment, Nips? The Chinese in general, the CCP in particular, or both? Cry me a river.
